A Vet, A Big Baby, and a PhD

Indie the dog is ill again - not ill enough that she is prostrate on the floor or anything, but ill enough to poop in the house even though Kirk is sitting right by the outside door and warrant another trip to the vet for $400 for what is likely giardia.  Kirk wonders why they just don't treat for probables like this instead of running all of the expensive diagnostic tests.  True. Then again, I would rather know what it is before babe arrives in two weeks.  Today, we went out for the afternoon, and when we came home Indie the dog was on the other side of dog gate.  Casualties:  one very destroyed roll of paper towel, one wooden toy, one stuffed kitten, possibly one live kitten (we see fur, but no Alice), one stuffed mouse and a pee smell we cannot find the source of.  I haven't yet ventured up to the top floor of the house for fear of poo.

I visited the midwife yesterday and I am measuring 36.5 weeks though I was only 34.3.  This accounts for the strong possiblity that this baby is already 6.5 pounds, and perhaps explains why I get comments every time I go out about how I look "ready to pop" or questioned "how many babies do you have in there?"  This could also explain the immense discomfort I feel right now and the heaving about I have to do to get myself out of bed and up our 5 flights of stairs.  Kirk has showed me the trick of checking for pitting edema in my legs, which I now have and do obsessively.  Also, I have called for the dog twice in the last couple of days, only to have her peek out from beneath my belly wagging her tail saying "I'm right here!".

I have (approx.) 15.2 days until my midwife has agreed to do the infamous stretch and sweep.  I don't know what I'll do if it fails to induce, although she has assured me it's just as easy to birth an 11 pound baby as it is a 9.10 ounce one.

Then again, what to do with a new baby??? Ack.  Yikes.  Eek.

I do feel it may be closer rather than later, however, because I am getting the restless "what do I want to do with my life" big manic dreams like doing a cross-disciplinary Phd in English and Religious Studies AND working AND having a newborn AND determining to run another marathon in May (it justifies the double Chariot purchase).

I have finished Yann Martel's new novel "Beatrice and Virgil."  It left an icky feelin,g as I think it was supposed to. I think I will have to reread it.  Any one else have thoughts?

  1. i almost didn't read that post since the title started the same! i can't believe you're possibly only two weeks from baby! exciting. :)Your dog adventures are very entertaining...sorry you have to deal with it all though. Has alice resurfaced?
And did you buy the double chariot? or are you still considering it? we love ours... with two in there now that they're both relatively large, it is pretty heavy for doing any real length of runs or runs with hills. the stroller itself is about 30lbs and then with 60lbs of kid in there it makes hills a bit much. but i do use it pretty much every day. :)
i had the not-so-lovely stretch and sweep before david was born (when he was about a week overdue) and it was very uncomfortable and unfortunately did not successfully induce labour for me. i wish you better luck with it! i'll have to call for a chat before you go. miss you!

  2. Luckily not many major hills in Ottawa - we did buy not just a double chariot but a double CXT for all the skiing we are going to do in Winter when Kirk is off. I like the ventilation better and the handbrake.

I had three stretch and sweeps with Anja - the third week was the charm. It sucks, but what sucks more is that this baby already measure around 7 pounds and gains a pound and a half a week and that it is oddly humid here and I have elephant legs. Sigh. Weep. Moan :)
